Buonavista College is a scenic landscape opening the gateway to the universe showing the pride of Southern Sri Lanka.
This unique landscape could draw the attention of scientists like Dr. Arthur C Clerk. The Dutch who spotted this picturesque landmark named it as” Buonavista ” meaning ‘ the beautiful scene ‘. The first foundation stone of Missionary Education had been laid in Buonavista College .It was then called as ” Buonavista English College ‘ in 1848.It had been upgraded to a secondary school in 1869.
The alma mater has given universal figures like the author of nation Martin Wickremasinghe , the professor Senarath Paranavithana, Governor, Sir Oliver Gunatilaka, veteran journalist Edwin Ariyadasa, former president of Maldives, Mr. Abdul Gayoom, as well as the founder of Sarvodaya Movement, Dr A.T. Ariyaratne. The name list rather lengthy including a number of world famous personalities as well as many government officers.
However due to the dark fate of time the school was about to be closed by the year 2016.Not only the infrastructure but also the human resources were limited shrinking the school to 33 students and 8 teachers . All were set to the swan- song to once a majestic school.fortunately a saviour rose from nowhere changing the fate of the school in 2016 with the arrival of mr.Karunaratne- Ganewatta .school started breathing her sigh of relief .He bold heartedly accepted the challenge of reconstructing the school shouldering to a mammoth task which you see the flourishing results he focused on the “smart school”concept handing hand with english medium education .the effects were amazing .currently more than 3000 students and 120 teachers show the growth of the buonavistian tree planted by the late principal he could develop the infra-structure of the school as well as started more than 50 co curricular activities By the end of the year 2021.,it became a national school reaching an important landmark of the school history .The inferno that lit the fame of fire extinguished forever in2023 the passing away of mr karunaratne- ganewatta was an unthinkable loss to the school .however the school is blessed to have an optimistic principal like mr R.G.Premaratne whose wish to continue the legacy carried out by the former principal .
He expanded the scope of the school starting the brandnew prefect body media unit and school cricket and much more.
Buonavista college is now ready to write her name in golden letters in the history of the school .May her be blessed to kindle the minds of many generations with the light of wisdom and dispel the darkness of ignorance.
