From the Pitch to the Podium: Buonavista College Hosts The Big Debate in the ‘Battle of Fraternity 2025’

As the excitement for the highly-anticipated “Battle of Fraternity 2025” cricket encounter between Buonavista College and Upananda College reaches a fever pitch, we are proud to announce another crucial contest that underscores the spirit of healthy rivalry and intellectual excellence: The Big Debate. This annual debate competition, held in conjunction with the Big Match, serves to remind the entire school community that the ‘Battle of Fraternity’ is as much a clash of minds as it is a contest of cricketing prowess.

While the Galle International Cricket Stadium awaits the spectacle of bats and balls, the College Main Auditorium is set to stage an equally enthralling spectacle of logic, rhetoric, and intellectual finesse. The Big Debate is a long-standing and cherished tradition in Sri Lankan school culture, where rival schools trade their cricketing colours for the oratorical arena. It is a powerful affirmation that a well-rounded education values critical thinking and articulate expression just as highly as sporting achievement.

Our Buonavista College debaters, meticulously coached and prepared, will passionately argue the side of the proposition, highlighting the indispensable life skills—leadership, teamwork, resilience, time management, and emotional intelligence—that activities like cricket, debating, and club participation instill. They will contend that it is the experience of navigating real-world pressures, such as those faced in a big match or a high-stakes debate, that truly forges a successful future leader, not merely a sheet of high examination marks.

Conversely, the talented team from Upananda College will provide a formidable opposition, likely stressing the foundational importance of academic achievement as the necessary prerequisite for higher education and career progression. They are expected to present a compelling argument for the structured knowledge and intellectual discipline that traditional examinations test.

This intellectual exchange is precisely why the Big Debate holds such significance. It encourages students from both schools and the wider community to engage with complex ideas, to see merit in opposing viewpoints, and to understand that a true ‘battle’ is one fought with intelligence and integrity.

The Big Debate extends the concept of ‘Fraternity’ beyond the boundary lines. It brings together the intellectual elite of both schools in a respectful setting, reinforcing the bond of scholarship and mutual respect that underpins their rivalry. The shared stage is a symbol of two institutions committed to nurturing not just skilled cricketers, but future thought leaders, policy makers, and responsible citizens.
